A Few Favorite Memories of Irving Pichel
- As the director of many fine films, including genre classics like the adventure thriller The Most Dangerous Game (co-credit with KONG creator Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1932),
the exquisite "lost world" fantasy She (co-credit with Lansing C. Holden, 1935), the comedy fantasy Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948),
and the pioneering science fiction adventure Destination Moon (produced by George Pal, 1950).
- As the uncredited (and unseen) narrator of several fine films directed by John Ford,
including How Green Was My Valley (1940, as the adult voice of Roddy McDowell's child character, "Huw Morgan"),
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949),
and the wartime documentaries The Battle of Midway (1942) and December 7th (1943).
- As the brutal madman "Philip Endicott," complicating the mystery in Paramount's Murder by the Clock (1931).
- As the wily but sympathetic scoundrel "Fagin," corrupting Dickie Moore and a ragged gang of orphan pickpockets in Oliver Twist (1933).
- As "Sandor," the gloomy, insanely jealous servant of Gloria Holden's "Countess Marya Zaleska," Dracula's Daughter (1936) —
one of the most memorable and best performed characters in classic horror films!
- As enemy spy "Nicolas Zarnoff," a criminal mastermind who engineers his own return from the dead after execution,
and gets the best of hard-working hero Ralph Byrd in almost every chapter of Republic's thrilling serial Dick Tracy's G-Men (1939) —
one of the most memorable and best performed characters in cliffhangers!
(Do we detect a pattern here?)
- As mad "Dr. Herbert Stander," experimenting on captured criminals aboard his private Torture Ship (1939).
Low budget programmer buoyed by a good cast, including Lyle Talbot, Julie Bishop, and everybody's favorite gargoyle, Skelton Knaggs.
Directed by Victor (White Zombie) Halperin!
